Everything Eats and Poops… even Skin!

People with skin conditions such as acnerosacea, and psoriasis often suffer from constipation and other digestive conditions.  Conversely, people with digestive conditions such as constipation, usually suffer from skin conditions that are linked to pores being ‘constipated’ with the build-up of sticky dead skin cells; conditions like acne, etc.

SkinAgain Skin Product and Skin TreatmentsJust like a sluggish digestion can come from not drinking enough water and not incorporating enough fiber into the diet, sluggish skin can be linked to de-hydration and not incorporating safe exfoliation methods into daily hygiene.

Here are some tips for the skin & digestion:

1.       Drink half your weight in ounces of water per day (If you weigh 150, drink 75 oz of water)… Yes, that much!

2.       Have whole grain oatmeal & honey for breakfast (and while it cooks, take some, mix with honey and exfoliate your face).

3.       Don’t forget to breathe and move………..A LOT!

Try these tips and tell us how they work!

Skin Care Resolutions 2010

Simple changes to your skin care routine can make all the difference to your skin. These 10 easy resolutions will have you well on your way to clearer, healthier glowing skin.

SkinAgain Womens Face

1. I will cleanse my face every night before going to sleep.

Take time every night to thoroughly cleanse your face, even if you don’t wear makeup. Doing so will help remove excess oil that may contribute to the development of blackheads, or clogged pores. And don’t forget about your neck, jaw line, and in front of and behind the ears. These are places commonly overlooked during cleansing.

2. I will stop exfoliating my skin with abrasive scrubs.

Thorough cleansing is good; vigorous scrubbing of the skin is not. Avoid abrasive scrubs, scrubbing pads, and rough washcloths if you have acne. Instead, use a soft cloth or your bare hands. If you feel you need more exfoliation, try an alpha hydroxy, salicylic, or glycolic acid product, which removes dead skin cells without abrasive ingredients. However, if you are using any prescription acne medications, such as Retin A, Azelaic acid, or Accutane, do not use any additional exfoliating products.

3. I will remember to do my skincare regimen every day.

Consistency is key in skincare. To get the results you’re looking for, you should do your skincare regimen everyday, or as directed. It’s easy to forget, especially when life gets busy. To help you remember, try using your products at the same time every day. Or get into the habit of applying your topical treatments at the same time that you do something else like just after brushing your teeth or as soon as you get home from work.

4. I will stop popping my pimples, or otherwise picking at my skin.

Popping pimples is bad for the skin. Every time you pop, squeeze, or pick at a blemish you run the risk of damaging the follicle wall and increase the chance of scarring. Picking at your skin will lengthen healing time and can push infected material deeper into the dermis. Remind yourself of that when you feel the need to squeeze a breakout.

5. I will get a facial at least four times a year.

facial_mask

Prebook a seasonal facial today with your skin specialist. Ideally you should get a facial every month, but if you can’t, at least get one every three months. If it’s in your schedule, you’ll make time for it. Whether you need deep cleansing or deep moisturizing an esthetician can get better results than you can get at home. In addition, most day spas offer a number of peels and other procedures, such as microdermabrasion, that can deal with specific problems, like discolorations and sagging skin.

6. I will wear sunscreen every day

Sun exposure, even 15 minutes of it midday, can damage skin and lead to fine lines, discoloration and loss of elasticity down the road. These conditions age you before your time. Sun exposure is cumulative. That means you will not see today’s sun damage today. When you do see it, it will be too late. Experts suggest you wear a daily SPF of 15 and use SPF 30 if you’re skiing or at the beach.

7. I will throw away old makeup and skincare products.

Take some time to go through all cosmetics and skin care products. Recall when the item was purchased, or look for an expiration date. If there is no date, there are other signs it needs to be tossed out, like eye shadow that has oil build-up or is dusty. Pressed powders and bronzers are sanctuaries for oil, bacteria and dirt. If mascara feels clumpy and dry, throw it out. Mascara is best when used in three months. A quick smell test does the trick for lipstick: If it smells funny, toss it.

8. I will give my skin a boost with new products.Serums Gift Set Image

Try a new brand of cleanser, toner or moisturizer. If skin your skin looks dull, its time for a boost. Add a facial “serum” like SkinAgain oZ-tone to the routine, a product that’s more concentrated and not as heavy as lotions and moisturizers. It’s never too early to start using eye creams and gels.

9. I will put down the martini and the cigarettes!

This is probably the most important resolution to make. Excessive drinking and smoking leads to pre-mature aging. Free radicals and toxins released into the body break down essential vitamins and collagen that is produced naturally, thus leading to wrinkling of the skin.

10. I will exercise regularly.female_workout

Regular exercise can contribute to a radiant complexion. Working out can have dramatic results on your skin by reducing acne breakouts, getting rid of toxins, facilitating collagen production and nutrient delivery and increasing circulation.

“. . . by the skin of your teeth.”

Have you ever heard of that phrase?  Actually, there are two ‘skins’ on your teeth.  The enamel we all know about, and then under that is a layer of softer yellower dentin that shows through when your enamel thins.

So what can you do to keep the enamel ‘skin’ nice and white without the risk of thinning it?

The secret is malic acid, the kind that is found in fresh strawberries.  Used no more than once a week, it acts as an astringent to remove surface discoloration.  Combined with baking soda, strawberries become a natural tooth cleanser, buffing away stains from coffee, tea, red wine and dark sodas.

Of course, there’s no replacement for a bleaching treatment, but this is a fast and cheap way to brighten your smile for the holidays.

What you will need:

1 ripe strawberry

½ teaspoon baking soda

Crush the strawberry and mix with baking soda.  Use a soft toothbrush and spread on your teeth, then wait for 5 minutes and brush with your usual toothpaste.  Rinse and floss.

Don’t do this more than once a week.  Watch the ‘skin of your teeth’ brighten, naturally!   (BTW, don’t substitute other fruits that may have citric acid, which is completely different from malic acid).

Unsightly scars? Get a FREE product just by telling us your story!

We’re in the business of skin and it’s about time somebody talks about a huge factor in skin that is actually the culprit of many diseases and health problems, and yet one that is rarely taken into account in health care practices.

SCARS!

Did you know that when not healed correctly, a scar can cause many blockages in energy flow, circulation and nerve flow?  It’s true!  When scar tissue builds up internally inside of the fascia of the body, it can inhibit circulation of blood and lymph, range of motion, muscle strength and compromise organ and endocrine function.

If you have a substantial scar, it could be wreaking havoc on your health, and you may not even know it!

To a person who has been severely burned, and whose scar covers a massive part of their skin, this is scary . . . and uncomfortable.

Recently, here at SkinAgain, we had the privilege of personally attending a Burn Institute survivor support group.  We found it empowering to hear their stories of courage, pain and survival. Here are a few things we learned about the ongoing challenges they have with their skin.

·         They cannot use anything with perfumes

·         Many of the products are too greasy

·         They need a moisture lotion under silicon sheets that are replaced daily.

·         They need something to use under their compression garments (which they wear for up to a year).

·         Many of them have skin discomfort the rest of their lives.

·         The cost for these products is ongoing…months and years and insurance doesn’t cover any of this!

If you’ve been following us here at SkinAgain, you know that our ongoing charity efforts is going to include giving our product to severely burned persons.

We would love to hear from you too!  Please share your story.  We will pick a winner from the first 10 comments and send them one FREE SkinAgain pHo-tone, a specially formulated healing Serum with over 300 energies to help soften and heal scar tissue.

People of color are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population.

Brown skin is beautiful and comes in an endless array of tones, from tapioca to cinnamon to deep dark brown.  Darker skin has benefits, but contrary to popular belief, darker skin is not tougher, in fact, this extra melanin makes the skin more sensitive and vulnerable to injury.

The darker the skin the more at risk for dark scarring and hyperpigmentation, so caution and care need to be taken, especially when having mildly invasive skin treatments done, like micro-dermabrasion or chemical peels.

Many common cosmetic procedures are geared toward lighter skin, and it’s only recently, as the country’s ethnic population has grown to 40%, that science is playing catch-up.

SkinAgain Pigment Correct was specially tested for people of color and proven effective for smoothing and evening the skin tone of beautiful ‘Browns’.

EXCITING OFFER!

The developer, Sherrie Berry is so confident and passionate about her formula, she is offering a free Pigment Correct to the first 20 visitors to this blog.

All you have to do is email: info@skinagain.com,  and title your subject “People of Color”.  Of course, all you lighter skinned bloggers are welcome too!  (Don’t forget to include your mailing address in the email!)

Do you believe in miracle anti-aging products?

It appears that faith in some ‘miracle’ anti-aging products may have been misplaced: a new report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) warns that an ingredient in some skin creams may have serious long-term health consequences for women with, or at risk for, breast and uterine cancer. The offending substance? Estrogen!

The story began with an alert oncologist. He observed that the skin of a woman he was treating for estrogen-driven breast cancer looked more youthful since her previous visit. The doctor quickly ascertained that, starting four weeks earlier, his patient had been applying a new moisturizing skin cream after her daily bath.

His interest was immediately piqued. For years, it has been known that one of the benefits of taking estrogen for relief of menopausal symptoms is younger-looking skin.

Could the cream she was putting on her skin contain estrogen? The product information provided no indication that it did.

His suspicion aroused, the oncologist sent a sample of the patient’s skin moisturizer, along with 15 other skin products, to an independent lab for analysis. The price of the creams ranged from $10 to several hundred dollars. Each was chosen based on the manufacturer’s claim that it rejuvenated, or enhanced the youthful appearance, of the skin. None listed estrogen as an ingredient.

The results supported the doctor’s concern: six — almost 40 percent — of the creams contained significant amounts (up to 0.61%) of estriol or estrone, two potent forms of estrogen. As a comparator, Estrase, a vaginal cream prescribed to treat symptoms of vaginal dryness in post-menopausal women, contains up to 60 times less estrogen!

Cosmetic companies are not currently required to submit their products for regulatory approval to agencies such as the FDA or Health Canada. Rather, as noted in a recent scientific review, complex skin formulations that contain potentially harmful ingredients are largely regulated by the cosmetic manufacturers themselves. And, as we have just learned, these same manufacturers generally do not feel inclined to divulge the presence of “problematical” ingredients like female hormones.

Should we be worried about the estrogen content of facial creams and other skin care products? In short, yes.

More to the point, women with breast cancer who are under treatment with an estrogen-lowering aromatase inhibitor should be especially concerned about any product that, without their knowing it, could work against this treatment by raising the level of blood estrogen through the skin. Similarly, healthy women at risk for breast or uterine cancer should also beware of the increased exposure to environmental estrogen inherent in some rejuvenating skin preparations.

Tune in for some first-person testimonials that will be posted on our site!

So, if you’re tired of the red, inflamed and painful rash that can be a side effect of any waxing treatment, as well as the bumps and ingrowns afterwards, you can finally experience relief!

On the set

This past week, we taped a segment with the Lifetime Channel’s Balancing Act program, chatting about the benefits of our energy-infused skincare line.

The show taped in Florida, and so we arrived on a plane from LA in plenty of time to relax and primp at a spa. We did a run through on the set the night before and all went well! It’s amazing, because no matter how many times you do this type of thing (and granted, this was our first Lifetime Channel taping), it’s always really nerve racking. Hopefully it came out great though. The show airs in October, and we’ll be sure to promote the heck out of it so no one misses it.
