Ultrasonic Facials

You've heard of ultrasounds for pregnant women, but ultrasonic facials? You bet. Some spas are now offerring this treatment for deep tissue stimulation and treatment of facial skin. Some pair it with microdermabrasion for a comprehensive skin fitness regimen. But what is ultrasound, and how does it aid skin care?

Ultrasound is a cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. The most common application is medical sonography -- the sonogram -- but doctors also use ultrasound to treat skin trauma (for example, to stimulate fibroblasts and collegen in the treatment of wounds) and for cosmetic purposes such as wrinkle elimination and skin hydration. In fact, the Journal of American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has stated that "New skin-care product formulations, used in conjunction with ultrasound, will allow deeper penetration of topically applied rejuvenating agents into the skin, resulting in significantly improved aesthetic results."
